Nordec has been heavily involved in the design and construction of the new city district OOPS in Leppävaara, Espoo. Nordec has brought excellence to the project in design, manufacturing and installation of frame structures and facades. The OOPS project follows Europe’s leading BREEAM environmental classification system for construction, which requires all project actors to take the principles of sustainable development into account at each stage of the project.

Nordec has been involved in the Oasis of Professionals (OOPS) construction project in Espoo since the design of the structures of the whole. Nordec has been responsible for the design, manufacturing and installation of the frame structures and facades such as thermo elements, cladding, roof structures and glass-aluminum windows. Nordec has brought its strong expertise to the value chain of the entire project and has thus been able to enable optimal use of materials and compliance with the principles of sustainable development throughout the value chain from the design onwards.

Sustainable solutions play a very important role in the project

In the upcoming OOPS city district, office space, business premises, accommodation services, restaurants and other services form a close-up community. Sustainable solutions play a very important role in building a new kind of urban environment. The project complies with the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), whose high Excellent level sets requirements for both the choice of materials used in the project and the use of materials. Building materials must be as long-lasting, recycled and environmentally friendly as possible. The durability and energy efficiency of buildings throughout their life cycle is seen as very important.

“It is great to be so extensively involved in implementing the OOPS construction project and a completely new urban environment. The BREEAM Excellence environmental certificate strongly communicates the environmental friendliness of the project. This project also supports Nordec’s values and our goal as a responsible actor is to adhere to the principles of sustainable development in all our projects. In the OOPS project, we have been responsible for the design, manufacturing and installation of the frame, facade and roof structures. In this way, we can use our solutions to influence the life cycle of the entire project, such as optimal use of the material, the cost-effectiveness of the project and also the service life and energy efficiency of the final building”, states Samu Pokela, Design and Sales Manager at Nordec.

“In the project we paid particular attention to the moisture engineering design and implementation of structures in terms of the outer mantle. All thermo element structures were made as factory-ready elements, where wooden and aluminum windows were installed in the factory with their trimmings. This ensured the technical operation of the structure. In addition, these prefabricated structures are affordable from an environmental point of view”, Markku Peurala, Sales Manager at Nordec explains.

The first office buildings A and B will be completed in August 2021 and the next buildings are already under development.

Year 2020 has been exceptional in many ways. Nordec as a new company was established around six months ago and we felt that it might be a good time to review back to the first six months now when we are heading towards Christmas time and a new year.

Our first months have been both exciting and challenging in the shadow of the global pandemic COVID-19 that hit us all during spring. Getting used to not being able to meet you in face -to-face and have discussions about projects as we did before, has changed our daily life in multiple ways. Travelling restrictions and remote working guidelines have affected our ways of working and challenged us to learn new skills. At the same time our business has continued and in project sites new rules has been implemented to secure projects to meet set timelines in safely manner. Together with you we have been able to proceed according to project plans and to succeed as one team. Our sincere thanks to you for our cooperation in 2020!

During this year we have met some milestones we had set to ourselves before.
In Q1 we signed contract for Nordics biggest logistics center, Bålsta, sizing up to 100.000 m2, where we are designing and building the frame and envelope. In Q2 we combined former Ruukki Building Systems and Normek into one company and brand successfully. At that time we also got our new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) announced. As part of our commitment to promote environmental awareness and sustainability, we are striving to minimize the carbon footprint of our products and deliveries. We are already today able to calculate the carbon footprint of each of our products, and this will in the near future be done for every individual project. During Q3 we signed a contract for a great new project Coop Eskilstuna, logistics center for groceries, sizing up to 75.000 m2. Now in Q4 we have signed a new contract for Northvolt DS2, part of a car battery factory, sizing up to 55.000 m2. Last month our former projects Vekaransalmi bridge and Kuusijärvi bridge were awarded, which we consider as great recognition for our capability to construct functional and beautiful parts of infrastructure.

We are, once again, very honored to have been chosen to your partner.
And of course, we are looking forward to many more projects in close cooperation with you!

This year we have instead of sending gifts chosen to make donation to charity.
Our selected charity partner is Unicef as we see that their mission of children’s rights for a healthy childhood and education are worth protecting.

We wish you and your family a safe and relaxing Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Kind regards,

on behalf of whole Nordec team

Nordec continues the strong presence on the Nordic logistics market by being chosen to deliver to Coop Sweden.

Nordec has once again been chosen as the frame contractor by TAB
(Tommy Allström Byggproduktion AB) for the development of Coop Sweden´s new distribution center.
The building will be located just outside of Eskilstuna.

The scope of Nordec design and build -delivery consists of steel frame system including the mezzanines of prefabricated concrete slabs, load bearing roof structure and wall structures consisting of façades and partition walls. The roof area of the building is approximately 70 000 m².

The groundworks on the construction site are currently under way. At the same time we at Nordec are performing the structural engineering and starting the manufacturing of the structures in our factories in Finland, Lithuania and Poland.

Already in December our site activities will begin by raising the frame of the high-bay warehouse.
We will carry on then with façades and complete the works by the end of September 2021.

During past year Nordec also had the opportunity to be cooperating with Coop Norway in
Oslo Gardemoen for expansion of their logistics center.

“We at Nordec are extremely proud to be part of another major investment from one of the market’s leading food suppliers. Previously we also have been entrusted with designing and constructing correspondingly large facilities, some actually ongoing in this very moment.  Of course we do see ourselves as the leading partner in this area”, says Magnus Thelm with a twinkle in his eye.

“In a project like this, the entire set up needs be built on teams we really trust. Having a partner with the knowledge, delivery security and collaboration ability that Nordec possesses, is crucial for us to feel secure in this which is our largest contract so far”, says Tommy Allström, CEO of TAB.

“We have a long and strong relationship with TAB. Together we have already built many modern logistics centers in the Swedish market and it is great to be once again the trusted partner in this spectacular project”, says Sampo Haapoja at Nordec.

Within Nordec we have a great history of making large buildings come true for our customers. But this, this one is BIG. 580 m long, 175 m wide and 30 m high. In other words, huge.

Let us proudly present that we at Nordec (yes, we have a new name) have been chosen as the frame contractor by Logicenters for the continued development of what will become one of Europe’s largest logistics facilities. The building is located in Bålsta, just outside of Stockholm and is developed for the tenant Dagab.

The scope of Nordec design and build -delivery consists of steel frame system, complete roof structure and wall structures including façades and partition walls. The roof area is approximately 102 000 m2 and total wall area almost the same.

“It is great that the development of our facility in Bålsta is on track. It was not easy finding a company able to deliver the amount of steel required for our facility in accordance with our tight schedule. It is therefore gratifying to have now begun collaboration with Nordec which meets our high standards in terms of both quantity and quality of deliveries,” says Eva Sterner, Head of Development at Logicenters.

The groundworks and casting of the concrete foundations are currently under way. Parallelly we at Nordec are performing the structural engineering and manufacturing of the structures in its factories in Finland, Lithuania and Poland. In June we will enter the site and begin raising the frame and façades. Works will be completed by the end of September 2021.

“At Nordec, we are proud to be part of Logicenters’ ambitious logistics development. Like Logicenters, we believe in a sustainable approach to what we do and therefore take care to ensure that the products we are now producing for the facility meet the high standards required. The fact that the collaboration is for such a large amount is, of course, also a feather in our cap,” says Magnus Thelm at Nordec.

“It is great to see that we are seen as the most capable and suitable contractor for logistics buildings in this scale. It proves that the work we have done past years with logistics segment is being recognized” says Sampo Haapoja at Nordec.
